Doirin Saurus
Doirin Saurus is a very talented ceramic artist and printmaker.
Some artists are instantly recognisable by the way they repeat and vary a small number of elements that become their personal signiture. Others, like
Doirin Saurus, see their work as perpetual discovery. That is why Doirin has explored everything from bowls, vases, drinking vessels, through to figurative sculpture and screenprinting onto clay. For her, the full range of human experience can be rendered in clay from the meditative calm of her wall pieces to the rollicking energy of the carousels.
The tiled conservatory tables reflect Doirin's interests in archeology and the natural world. After several trips to Malta, the artist created a series based on the tiny sleeping clay figure found in an ancient temple.
When Doirin returned from a residency on Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran islands, she created another series of tables with themes depicting the rock strata of the island. Animals and birds such as goats, horses and geese are recurring motifs in her work.
The technical aspects of ceramic tile making which allows for the build up of colours using chalks, layers of slips, lustres and glazes allows Doirin to give expression to her love of colour and the repeated firing processes used adds its own energy to the finished work.
Doirin Saurus has also worked on public art commissions in Galway and Wexford.
