New Era for Local Art

West Kerry print exhibition: Ciara Mckenna, Dómhnal Ó Bric, Pat Owen, Deirdre McKenna, Áine Ní Chíobháin, Sue Hook, Ursula Tramski, Sandra Landers, Susan Callery, Micheál Flaherty, Lisbeth Mulcahy, Kate Bijou Hunter, Tomás Ó Cíobháin, Jindra Stanek, Jack Bates, Maya Binder, Sinéad Lough, Lenka Bardakova, Clodagh Edwards, Caroline O Connor.

Meitheal Eitseála is the name adopted by a group of artists who attended a course in etching and print making given by Niall Naessens in his Brandon studio over the winter.

This is their second exhibition, which runs until the beginning of June, in Greenlane Gallery, Dingle, 2012.

Their first exhibition was hailed as the first stage in a new artistic development in West Kerry by renowned artist Maria Simmonds Gooding.

“This is a wonderful development and is the start of a very important breakthrough in the local visual arts scene. Print-making is the right discipline to start with for artists. All of the people involved in this group have different talents and this is the first exhibition of its kind that we’ve seen in West Kerry,” she told The Kerryman.

Tomás Ó Ciobháin praised Niall Naessens for sharing his craft with young and old artists.

Meitheal Eitseála (West Kerry Printmakers) return with their second Féile na Bealtaine exhibit, ‘Hot Plate’.

We’ve more than doubled in artists – from ten to twenty-five – and expanded both skills and techniques. ‘Hot Plate’ speaks of our common experience of applying ink to copper on a heated surface. Whether working with hard ground, soft ground, sugar lift, aquatint, dry point or any combination of these, we all must go to the hot plate as a first step in inking to make a finished print.

In 2012, Meitheal Eitseála invites printmakers from outside the Dingle Peninsula to join the exhibit, presenting an even wider exploration of the vocabulary of printmaking.
