Africa Awakes
is a series of photographs created in December 2007 by Manuel Scrima, an Italian photographer Manuel Scrima is a digital entertainment consultant and photographer, who was working across Europe in the early 2000s. He started collaborating with ICROSS in early 2005. After visiting Africa in February 2006, he left his job and started to work full time as a volunteer to help the charity. Using the powerful images of his photographs, he creates events, exhibitions and projects, travelling between Europe and Africa. All these projects now are going to be housed under Create Africa, the company he is now heading, in its fight against poverty.
The Kenyan NGO New World International is proud to introduce the international exhibition Africa Awakes in Paris.
What comes to mind when one thinks of Africa?
Perhaps it is poverty, starvation, disease, AIDS, corruption, dictatorship or civil wars….such are the images that have defined our perception today of one of the greatest continents on Earth.
All too often, if we are not overwhelmed with a feeling of sadness, our thoughts turn to the nature reserves and game parks, possibly the continent's rich reserves in natural resources - yet none of these images fully represents Africa today.
The objective of Africa Awakes is to enable people to experience the magic of Africa and Kenya with its culture. It brings together the power and sheer scale of Africa, combining the energy and fire of the ancient and the new. This exhibition portrays the profound distortions that exist today in Africa, illustrating the reality of life as seen through the eyes of the people, through their customs. It is raw and compelling, highlighting the challenges and contradictions facing Africa today as well as the confrontation between tradition and contemporary.
After Paris, the exhibition will move to Rome to the charming Trastevere. In 2009 the exhibition will be in Finland to Tampere and Helsinki. The plans are to bring the exhibition to many locations including Milano, London, Budapest, Dublin, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Antwerp and Johannesbourg.
The exhibition was created to support ICROSS and NWI, international NGOs operating in Kenya and committed to the eradication of poverty ...and now, more than ever, people in Kenya need its support. The aim of this exhibition is not only to raise the necessary funds to finance the work of ICROSS and NWI in Kenya. It is also to raise awareness of the plight of the peoples of Africa and the difficulties they face. The proceeds of the sale of these photographs will support the work of these NGOs in Kenya.
The Opening will be on the 14 th November from 7pm . Her Excellency Raychelle Awuor OMAMO, the ambassador of Kenya in France, will open the event.
The press viewing will be the 14 th November in the afternoon from 3pm. |
