RENOWNED KERRY ARTIST OPENS TWO HIGHLY ANTICIPATED EXHIBITIONS THIS AUTUMN

October 2008. Renowned Kerry Artist, Michael Flaherty, will open two highly anticipated exhibitions this month which will run concurrently at the Greenlane Gallery in Paris from the 17 October – 24 October and in the Greenlane Gallery Dingle from the 25 October.

Flaherty has been an intense observer of the land and seascapes of the Dingle Penninsula for over fifteen years. In particular it is the unique character of the area below Mount Brandon, where the relationship between mountain and sea is at its most dramatic, that interests him most. This is where Flaherty grew up and still lives, and where he has produced the work for which he has become world-renowned.

This is not to say that Flaherty has limited his vision in any way. The summit of Mount Brandon – at a height of 953 meters - offers on a clear day views as far as the Aran Islands to the north, Dursey Head to the South; and in between, to the east, the cliffs of County Clare, the Shannon estuary, the plains of North Kerry, Carrauntuohill, Dingle Bay and the Iveragh Penninsula. To the west lies the vast expanse of the Atlantic, reflecting the ever-changing weather, and giving advance warning of advancing storms.

If this is geography that inspires his work, Flaherty brings to it an uninhibited palette. Working in layers of thick impasto, his use of colour is bold, vibrant, daring and unconventional, making the scene more intense and the sense of movement more vital.

One of West Kerry’s true stars, Flaherty's new exhibitions will delight his supporters, and the uninitiated alike.
