Doírín Saurus is a ceramic artist with a studio in Fethard Co Tipperary.
Some artists are instantly recognisable by the way they repeat and vary a small number of elements that become their signature. Others, like Dóirín Saurus, see their work as perpetual discovery.
This is why Dóirín has explored everything from bowls to tiled tables, from portrait cups to figurative sculptures. For her the full range of human experience can be rendered in clay – from the meditative calm of her wall pieces to the rollicking energy of the carousel.
Her pieces are joy-filled and brimming with colour and life. Discussing her work she says, “My present focus is on smaller objects using paper clay and the wide range of velvet underglazes now available. My wish is to make objects of delight that function well that may even for brief moments enhance the lives of discerning tea drinkers.”
As well as showing her work in annual Ceramic Ireland exhibitions, in Thomastown for the Kilkenny Arts Festival , in Áras Éanna on Inis Oirr following a 2 month residency and most recently in The Bridge Gallery in Co. Kilkenny, her ceramics can be seen in The Sliding Rock Gallery in Spidal and she has been with The Greenlane Gallery since 1990.
She has had several commissions to make tiled panels for public spaces in Galway and Tipperary under the percent for art scheme.
Work from an exhibition based on Peig Sayers and island life held in The Blasket centre for the 2019 Féile Bealtaine was subsequently on view in the Greenlane and Doirin was delighted that it could remain in the much loved peninsula of Corca Dhuibhne.
