Robert Shaw

Born 1964, Robert Shaw trained at Dun Laoghaire School of Art & Design in the late nineteen eighties. A native of Malahide, a coastal village north of Dublin city, Robert’s work is strongly influenced by the rich historical and spiritual heritage of Ireland’s Leinster coastline.

My paintings are about the power and majesty of nature and how we are all a part of its vastness.

For almost a decade Robert had a studio overlooking Howth Harbour, another fishing village on the eastern coast of Ireland. From here he took his inspiration from the land that stretch as far as the mountains of Mourne in the north and the vast sea extending as far as the coast of Wales in the east. During many easterly storms Robert would watch the trawlers racing in for safe harbour which instilled in him a great awe for the unpredictable power of nature and an admiration for the braveness of those that encountered it.

Oceanic coastlines continue to be a source of Robert’s inspiration. Working today from his studio at Donabate, Co. Dublin, his paintings sensuously capture the essence of nearby shores and estuaries before and after a storm. He uses light and reflection in a stirring way that evoke a sense of still and awe. The depths of tone and use of distorted viewpoints draw one deeper into the painting, and the details found in the middle ground often unveil a few surprises. The result is an ever-changing painting.

Robert’s own history is steeped in maritime heritage. His grandfather, at Cobh Harbour, witnessed the last passengers embark the Titanic and also the victims of the Lusitania. His grandmother was a McCarthy from Bantry and Robert spent all of his childhood summers in West Cork and Kerry.
